One of the long-standing goals of the Foundation for Family Businesses was achieved with the launch of a supranational expert group on family-owned businesses. Previously, all the initiatives of the European Commission were focused primarily on small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), thus excluding large family-run businesses from their scope.
As early as 2004, Günther Verheugen, one of the then EU vice-presidents, drew attention to the special significance of family businesses as a driving force for European economic growth, with their sustainability, high rates of innovation and high levels of social and economic engagement.
The objective of the expert group – a body to which the Foundation for Family Businesses was the sole German institution to be appointed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy – is to represent the special interests of family-owned businesses at EU level.
